In February The Washington Post laid off nearly 30 percent of its workforce, including more than 300 journalists, and shuttered or significantly downsized entire sections of the paper. The recent effort to reshape The Washington Post is not only a devastating blow to the city, but a sad reflection of what's happening to journalism and journalists in America. The rationale of fabulously wealthy media owners who allow politics to influence what and how their papers report and editorialize may be part of the problem. But surely the industry-wide economic challenges and cultural shifts in how Americans get and process their news presents challenges even for elite papers.
